WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

In this increasingly competitive global marketplace, companies need managers and staff who correctly understand financial information. This ability helps both them and management to measure performance, to plan for the future, and to make better business decisions.

The Essentials of Finance is a one-day, interactive workshop designed to provide non-financial people with a basic understanding of finance and its use in planning and decision making.

This workshop can be expanded to a two-day course with a greater review of budgeting.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

  • Any manager, supervisor, buying professional, sales professional, team leader, or individual contributor wishing to expand or enhance their current understanding of money management and how decisions affect profitability

YOU WILL LEARN TO:

  • Understand basic managerial accounting principles and terminology
  • Read financial statements with confidence and understanding, e.g. balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements
  • Understand the meaning and importance of Financial Statement notes
  • Use simple and useful accounting ratios to gage performance, forecast, and support decision making
  • Address decisions based on the principle of time value of money
  • Set, work with, and monitor budgets

PRE-WORK

Participants will be asked to complete a number of pre-work activities to familiarize themselves with a number of terms and concepts as well as to provide real data to work with during the workshop.

Introduction to the World of Finance

  • Concepts and terminology of financial systems
  • How to talk to financial people in their words and your
  • What drives each line of the P&L and Balance Sheet

How to Prepare and Read Financial Statements

  • Balance Sheet: assets, liabilities, and owner’s equity
  • Income Statement: revenues, expenses, income
  • Statement of Cash flow: cash from Operations, Investing Activities, Financing Activities
  • Financial Statement Notes

Business Unit Planning and Budgeting

  • The operating budget
  • The cash budget
  • Evaluation
  • Exercises in budget planning

The Mathematics of Finance

  • Calculating simple interest and simple discount
  • Calculating and understanding compound interest and compound discounts
  • Calculating and understanding time value of money
  • Understanding capital budgeting and depreciation

Summary and Evaluations

METHODS TO BE USED

Participants will draw on their own personal financial experience (borrowing, mortgages, leases, portfolios, managing household income, etc.) to better understand more complex, corporate financial concerns and how these concerns relate to their organization.
