Subject matter experts and leaders face a common challenge: the “curse of knowledge.” What is crystal clear to the expert often becomes a fog of information to the audience, especially when there are only minutes to make the case to senior decision-makers. Carefully prepared briefing notes and presentations frequently lose their impact when they are delivered.

This workshop introduces storytelling as a strategic communication tool used by the most influential leaders. Participants learn how to recognize the stories they already have, how “getting your story straight” sharpens analytical thinking, and how to wrap critical evidence in narrative so that it is remembered and acted upon. The result is greater clarity and impact in both presentations and written documents.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

  • Public servants at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels who present to senior decision-makers
  • Subject matter experts who need to communicate complex information clearly and persuasively
  • Policy analysts, program officers, and advisors who prepare briefing notes and recommendations
  • Managers and directors responsible for influencing decisions and securing buy-in
  • Communications professionals preparing speaking points, presentations, and public-facing materials
  • Anyone who has felt that the message did not land the way it deserved to

PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN:

  • Why important messages so often fail to land with senior leaders, and what executive presence really means
  • Why the human brain is wired for stories, and how stories impose meaning on data
  • How to consider the audience before the content, and adapt the story to their interests and perspective
  • Practical techniques for structuring a story, deciding what to include, and what to leave out
  • How to be the best version of themselves as a storyteller, and avoid common pitfalls
  • How to apply storytelling within the constraints of departmental templates and limited time

COURSE OUTLINE

The Challenge of Briefing Up

  • How to increase one’s Executive presence, inspire confidence and win trust.

The Solution: Storytelling as the Language of Leaders

  • Why our brains are wired to think in stories
  • How stories impose meaning on data and make evidence memorable
  • Why storytelling is the language of the most influential leaders

Knowing Your Audience

  • Why different audiences have different interests and priorities
  • Looking at the message from the audience’s perspective
  • Using empathy to align the story with what the audience cares about

Tips for Constructing a Work-Ready Story

  • Practical techniques for structuring a story
  • Deciding what to include and, just as importantly, what to leave out
  • Adapting structure to departmental templates and time constraints
  • Learning how generative AI can serve as your storytelling coach.

The Storyteller: Being the Best Version of Yourself

  • Developing your own authentic storytelling voice
  • Avoiding common pitfalls and habits that undermine impact
  • Getting the opportunity to practice a story and receive feedback.

METHODOLOGY

This is a hands-on, full-day workshop delivered in-person or virtually for groups of 6 to 20 participants. The day combines short instructional segments, group discussion, demonstrations, and guided practice. Participants are encouraged to bring a real communication challenge they need to deliver, and work on it during the day. The environment is supportive and focused on constructive feedback that stretches each participant’s abilities while respecting their comfort level. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have practised crafting and telling their own stories and developed practical techniques they can apply immediately.
